The Maritime Institute opened in 1976 in San Diego, CA and soon became a national leader in providing the most complete, comprehensive and up-to-date USCG approved courses for professional working mariners with an emphasis on safety and environmental awareness.

Maritime Institute is different from traditional maritime colleges and universities, because the student body consists of individuals with an exceptionally wide range of responsiblities. There are private boat owners, law enforcement, active duty and retired military, commercial boat and ship operators from sportfishing, towing and passenger ferries.

A consistenly high portion of the educational resources are dedicated to experienced professional mariners, those working mariners who need to renew or upgrade a current license.

Guard and National Maritime Center approve each of
our instructors.

The Instructors are knowledgeable andprofessional; with
backgrounds varying from retired U.S.Coast Guard and
U.S. Navy personnel to active Merchant Marine Officers.

For over 30 years, Maritime Institute has been assisting Navy, Army, and Coast Guard commands by providing mission relevant education and training for their personnel while allowing the students to achieve their greater potential, professionally and personally.

Maritime Institute’s training is an ideal way for military personnel to receive rating related training prior to going before advancement boards or to “retire” into a second career with the maritime industry. With our accreditation, service personnel attending the school are able to use the DOD, VA and other Tuition Assistance Programs to help pay for their courses. US Navy, Coast Guard, and Army personal have been able use their service experience, and with the school’s training obtain a U.S. Coast Guard License.

Our mobile training teams have been instrumental in providing on-site training for military commands on limited training budgets, reducing their TAD costs and training a larger numbers of personnel. One overseas command was able to train 8 personnel for the same cost of sending one person TAD to school.

Maritime Institute has worked carefully to design each online courses to closely follow the instruction given in the classroom course. The main difference is the exchange among students and instructors is limited to the student/instructor and occurs electronically.

Online courses offer students not able to attend a classroom course the educational opportunities which might better fit their circumstances. In the past, institutions offering online courses reported that up to fifty percent online courses were never completed. We strive to keep the materials interesting and provide support to assist students in sucessfully completing our courses. A student with a good sense of responsiblity will manage the time needed to study the materials, ask questions, and complete the work.

The final examination must be proctored; either at one of our classroom locations, or through arrangements we make with a military base education office. A sealed test will be sent to the proctor location. Upon providing satisfactory I.D., the student can take the test.
