For students completing classes after November 15, 2025: 

For up to three (3) years after completion, you may return to the Maritime Institute and receive complimentary access to our online “OUPV to Master Upgrade” course—ensuring you can move toward your ultimate licensing goal without repeating foundational training.

 

Master 100 Tons IN-CLASS session: We will mail you the following required books with instructions on what to study in advance of your class: (3) Maritime Institute Captain Course textbooks, and (1) U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules & Regulations Handbook also known as the "Rules of the Road" handbook. Plotting tools will be loaned to you in-class. 

 

We highly advise that students register at least one month in advance to allow adequate time to study. The CLASSROOM sessions are held over two weeks, Monday through Friday 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, with approx. 2-5 hours of homework every night and on weekends. Final examinations are taken in-class on the last day.

For the Master 100 Tons ONLINE COURSE format: After registering for the online course, you will receive access to our online portal within 3-5 business days via email. You have 12 Weeks to complete the online course, starting on the date that Maritime Institute Student Services emails you the link to our online portal with your log-in details. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS past this 12-week time frame. The course is done at your own pace to complete the required readings, studying, and quizzes. There are no set meetings, discussion times, nor virtual/live instruction. The following items will be mailed to you:
(1) Training chart, (1) USCG Navigation Rules & Regulations Handbook ("Rules of the Road" book), and (1) Mariner's Guide to Rules of the Road study aid. Final exams for ONLINE COURSES must be proctored IN-PERSON at one of our approved locations in: Alameda and San Diego, CA; Norfolk, VA; Honolulu, HI and Everett, WA. You should ensure you are aware of the U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center requirements for a license prior to registering for a course.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Master 100 Tons (MARINS-281) course within one year of application will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j)(1) for original issuance, 46 CFR 10. 227(e)(1)(iii) for renewal, and 46 CFR 10.227(i) for reissuance for any one the following endorsements: Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters); OR Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters). A course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter.
