Qualified Member of the Engine Department QMED - PUMPMAN/MACHINIST

Mariners successfully completing Maritime Institute's QMED Pumpman/Machinist course will satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for national rating endorsements as QMED Pumpman/Machinist.

​TO APPLY FOR THE ENDORSEMENT ON YOUR MMC, THE CERTIFICATE(S) OF COMPLETION FROM THIS COURSE MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE USCG WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE COURSE COMPLETION DATE.

Mariners will demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill, and understanding for maintaining, repairing, and operating:

Deck machinery
Material handling equipment
Underway replenishment (UNREP) machinery
Proficient in the use of machine shop equipment:

Lathes
Milling machines
Drill presses
Arbor presses, etc.
Proficient in the use of various hand tools:

Handheld power tools
Burning, brazing systems
OXY-Acetylene cutting and brazing systems
Stick welding
Wire welding
Mig welding
Flex core welding

 
Candidates for this course must have already successfully completed an approved STCW Basic Training course.  STEEL-TOED SHOES are REQUIRED to participate in the QMED PUMPMAN/MACHINIST Course.

180 days of sea service in a rating at least equal to that of a wiper or coal passer, is required for a QMED Pumpman/Machinist endorsement.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your QMED – Pumpman/Machinist (MARINS-802) course within one year of application will satisfy: The examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for a national rating endorsement as QMED-Pumpman/Machinist; AND The course requirements of 46 CFR 13.401(e)(1) for original issuance OR 13.120(b)(2) for renewal of Tankerman-Assistant (DL); AND The standards of competence required by 46 CFR 13.609(a)(2) for an STCW endorsement for Basic Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations; AND The standards of competence required by STCW Code Section A-V/1, Table A-V/1-1-1, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 22-14(Ch-2) for Basic Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations. A course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter.
