The Maritime Institute opened in 1976 in San Diego, CA and soon became a national leader in providing the most complete, comprehensive and up-to-date USCG approved courses for professional working mariners with an emphasis on safety and environmental awareness. Maritime Institute is different from traditional maritime colleges and universities, because the student body consists of individuals with an exceptionally wide range of responsibilities. There are private boat owners, law enforcement, active duty and retired military, commercial boat and ship operators from sportfishing, towing and passenger ferries. A consistently high portion of the educational resources are dedicated to experienced professional mariners, those working mariners who need to renew or upgrade a current license. |

| For over 30 years, Maritime Institute has been assisting Navy, Army, and Coast Guard commands by providing mission relevant education and training for their personnel while allowing the students to achieve their greater potential, professionally and personally. Maritime Institute’s training is an ideal way for military personnel to receive rating related training prior to going before advancement boards or to “retire” into a second career with the maritime industry. With our accreditation, service personnel attending the school are able to use the DOD, VA and other Tuition Assistance Programs to help pay for their courses. US Navy, Coast Guard, and Army personal have been able use their service experience, and with the school’s training obtain a U.S. Coast Guard License. Our mobile training teams have been instrumental in providing on-site training for military commands on limited training budgets, reducing their TAD costs and training a larger numbers of personnel. One overseas command was able to train 8 personnel for the same cost of sending one person TAD to school. |
