Our U.S. Coast Guard Approved Captain's Online (Distance Learning) Course meets the written examination requirement for the following U.S. endorsements: Master of vessels less than 100 Gross Registered Tons (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters), Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters).


 


The course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter. 


 


Upon enrolling in the online course, within 2-3 business days you will receive an email with access to the online course portal.

You have 12 weeks of course access to complete the online course, starting on the date that Maritime Institute sends you your course log-in email. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS past this 12-week time frame. The course is at your own pace but you will have 12 weeks to complete the 80 hours (approx.) of required readings, studying, and quizzes. There are no set meetings, discussion times, nor virtual/live instruction.


 


When you are finished with the online course, you will schedule your final exams to take in-person with us. The final exams for this course must be taken at one of our approved testing locations. Our testing locations are currently only in: Alameda and San Diego, California;  Honolulu, Hawaii. Upon successful completion of the final exams, you will receive a course Certificate of Training that is valid for 1 year to be submitted to apply for the endorsement.

You will need to be self-motivated and disciplined, and have the available time, to complete the course within twelve weeks. To get an idea of the amount of study time that is involved, a good comparison is that our students in the intensive 2-week classroom course spend 2-5 hours daily studying outside of class and on the weekends.
 
You should ensure you are aware of the U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center requirements for a license/endorsement, prior to enrolling in a course. Please visit our license requirements page to review some of the important requirements for a national OUPV or Master Less than 100 Tons license; and more importantly, refer to the USCG National Maritime Center website. Our staff can help answer your questions about which level of license you may qualify for.

Basic Calculator (non-programmable, smart phones cannot be used)

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Master 100 Tons (MARINS-281) course within one year of application will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j)(1) for original issuance, 46 CFR 10. 227(e)(1)(iii) for renewal, and 46 CFR 10.227(i) for reissuance for any one the following endorsements: Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters); OR Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters).
