Maritime Institute is a provider of professional maritime training with primary training enters located in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA, and satellite locations in Honolulu, HI; Everett, WA; and Alameda, CA. We provide over 100 deck and engineering USCG and STCW approved courses for initial endorsement and career enhancing upgrade training. Our expert staff of instructors provides a combination of unequaled teaching techniques with cutting-edge simulation technology and “hands-on” training systems. Instructors spend 20 – 40 hours a week teaching in a state-of-the-art facility to personnel with various experience levels in the industry.
There is classroom instruction, coupled with the use of mechanical and electrical training laboratories, full mission capable simulators.

Maritime Institute is seeking candidates for part-time positions with the following attributes:
- A candidate who is fluent in the performance of steam plants and auxiliaries.
- A candidate who is fluent inmethods to monitor temperature and pressure, ranges, and other parameters.
- A candidate experienced with shop equipment and maintenance procedures.
- A candidate who is fluent in standard industry practice.
Required Qualifications:
- Employment is contingent upon completion of the train-the-trainer course, primary course of instruction, and approval by the National Maritime Center.
- At least three years experience in the engine room of steam ships AND motor vessels of at least 1600 GRT/3000 ITC as a QMED-Fireman/Watertender
AND QMED-Oiler OR as QMED-Junior Engineer - OR one year experience as an officer in charge of the engineering watch for
each propulsion mode (steam and motor). - OR military ratings of Machinist’s Mate, Boiler Tender, Engineman or Machinery Technician with at least three years shipboard experience on steamships and motor vessels.
- OR equivalent shore side knowledge, experience, and credentials such as stationary steam power plant applications operational experience.
- Excellent hands on mechanical skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent knowledge, skill, and understanding of operation and maintenance of all engine room machinery.•Experience operating and maintaining conventional steam plants in multiple configurations.
- Excellent understanding of risk mitigation and safety involving steam.
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates the ability to positively maintain a focused learning environment in a variety of situations and settings.
- Must possess effective communication skills and establish a good rapport with staff, students, and guests.• Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with students in group settings and in one-on-one environments.
- Work day shifts and travel for on-site training on occasion.
- Use teaching techniques to dynamically present the curriculum to students of a wide range of ages and abilities.
- Convey knowledge of and demonstrate safety procedures to participants in educational activities and effectively enforce safety guidelines.
- Works with supervisors to resolve student behavioral problems.
- Assists in the maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Assists the Engineering Department Head in developing/implementing new curriculum.
- Works as part of a team with other staff members and uses interpersonal communication techniques to ensure the success of the programs and positive work environment.
- Maintains a positive and professional attitude/appearance in an instructional working environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Power-point, Outlook and Excel).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
