Pat Johnsen joined the Maritime Institute in January, 2023 and combines maritime training activities with underway quality auditing of commercial ships and towing vessels. He is a 1966 graduate of the California Maritime Academy and a veteran of the Viet Nam War with over 2 years of service in Southeast Asia on Army tugs and landing craft. Subsequent to his Army service he was employed by a variety of maritime employers in seagoing capacities from AB to Master on tugs, freight vessels and tankers. After several years sailing Master with the tanker fleet of the Mobil Oil Corporation, Pat accepted a position ashore with Mobil as a port captain and enjoyed progressively senior assignments that culminated as Manager of Mobil’s domestic fleet headquartered in New York and later, Fairfax, Virginia. Employment in senior maritime related management positions with the Kirby Corporation in Houston TX, Atransco in Annapolis MD, the Morgan Stanley Commodity Group in Rye, NY and US Shipping in Edison, NJ followed the conclusion of his Mobil career in 1993 and in 2012 he transitioned from fulltime employment to contract activities that continue to the present and that include a recent 3 year stint with General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) doing Bridge Resource Management Training for the Military Sealift Command. Pat continues to hold a valid Oceans license as unlimited Master with various pilotage endorsements and is a life member of VFW Post #392 in Virginia Beach, the American Legion and the Viet Nam Veterans of America. He is the Father of 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
