BASIC TRAINING REFRESHER (STCW BT)

This 3-day (24 Hour) Basic Training Refresher course meets the minimum standard of competence for Basic Training provided the person seeking the endorsement has been previously certified per Section VI/1 of the STCW Code.

 

Mariners successfully completing Basic Training Refresher course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for STCW Basic Training in STCW, as amended 2010, Basic Training in Section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(e) and 46 CFR 12.602(e), AND, all of the tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 08-14. Applicants are not required to present completed record of assessment sheets when applying for the STCW endorsement.

The Basic Training Refresher course consists of the 4 modules required for the STCW endorsement in Basic Training. The following modules are included:

 

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (Classroom)

  • Basic Firefighting (Classroom)

  • Basic Firefighting (Practical)

  • Personal Survival (Classroom)

  • Personal Survival Practical Demonstration (Pool)

  • Basic First Aid, CPR and AED

Please Note: Basic Training courses require that you participate in practical assessments. You will be getting into the swimming pool and will need to bring a change of clothes, towel and a light jacket.

The following is a list of required Performance Standards and Assessments for Basic Training Classes. Candidates must pass the assessments to receive a completion certificate and will have two further attempts within 90 days to complete any incomplete portion, in order to receive a completion certificate.

The candidate demonstrates proper donning of all the following equipment in 3 minutes:

1. Flash hood,
2. Turnout pants and boots;
3. Turnout coat;
4. Helmet, and
5. Gloves

Tread water remain afloat without aid for at least 1 minute.

Don a lifesaving PFD in 1 minute, properly fitted, positioned, and secured.

Don an immersion suit in 2 minutes, properly fitted, positioned, and secured.

Successfully right an inverted life raft and complete all the following within 10 minutes:

1. Swim to boarding ramp;
2. Grab boarding straps;
3. Kick legs while pulling self into raft; and
4. Board raft

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Training Refresher (MARINS-68) course will satisfy: The Basic Training continued standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(e) and 12.602(e) for mariners who have previously held a Basic Training endorsement under STCW Code Section A-VI/1 but cannot meet the requirement for 1 year of sea service in last 5 years; STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) all Tasks. Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
