Catalina Adventure Sailing is now hiring qualified, outgoing and fun captains for the 2021 summer!
We’re looking for 2 or 3 captains carrying Near Coastal OUPV or greater credentials to host sailing tours off Catalina Island. The season will officially kick off in May/June, but there may be an opportunity to start sooner. The end of the season will depend on weather and demand, possibly ~October.
The boat will be moored at Avalon and available for you to stay on while you’re working. The workload will depend on how many captains are in rotation and how much each wants to/can work. Flexibility is key! You’ll be the sole operator of the vessel and shift operations for no more than 6 passengers. The position will have a base salary, plus you’ll get tips from your charters.
The vessel is a 40ft trimaran. She’s comfortable and easy to sail, and has a new Yanmar diesel engine should the winds be light. The bulk of tours will likely be daytime only, 2-3hr excursions, and up to 3 per day. There will be some half-day or all-day charters thrown in. (Due to covid, we’re only offering whole-boat private charters for 1 to 6 passengers, and not offering individual seats on tours.) Charter activities could include swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, good old fashioned sailing, whale watching, anchoring at the beach, sunset cruises, or just motoring around the island. Our aim is for them to have a memorable time.
Captains will be expected to learn (or already know) about the island and be able to whip out a few interesting and possibly little-known facts (so, locals are encouraged to apply). After all, we want our passengers to not only have an amazing time on the water, but also learn a little something new in the process.
Come join our team and help people get back out to play in nature!
Job Types: Part-time, Contract/seasonal.
Qualifications: Demonstrated captain experience on a sailboat of comparable size; US Coast Guard OUPV or greater license; and current First Aid (or willingness to get it prior to starting). Some basic boat maintenance would be an advantage, as would some experience in customer service, marketing or managing events.
Language: English (Required)
Work Location: Catalina Island, CA. No remote work available.
This job is a good fit for applicants with gaps in their resume, or who have been out of the workforce for the past 6 months or more.
