POSITION SUMMARY
The Deckhand is responsible to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel, ensuring guest comfort and safety while underway, and assisting with docking and undocking. Shipmates/deckhand must uphold the strictest safety standards for guests and crew and will maintain a professional and friendly environment..
The successful Deckhand will personally contribute to the unforgettable guest experience, be favorably viewed by supervisors and peers, and be swift and efficient in the execution of their assigned duties. Performance will be measured by management evaluation, and feedback from the Captains.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
● Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers based on the mission statement of the
Harrisburg Riverboat Society
● Learn and perform the daily responsibilities found in the Harrisburg Riverboat Operations Manual
● Demonstrate knowledge of the Operations Manual and work responsibilities within one month of employment
● Must attend a safety training at the beginning of each sailing season as provided by the Captains (to include man overboard drill)
● Follow safety procedures to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel
● Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents
● Handle lines to moor and unmoor vessel
● Stands watch on vessel’s bow, stern, or bridge wings to look for obstructions in a vessel’s path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and boat launch or marina
● Assist Captain and supervisory personnel in maintaining vessel equipment and systems such as HVAC, engine, and technical equipment
● Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas
● Sweep, mop, and wash down decks and exterior to remove dirt, and debris (using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses)
● Load or unload materials from vessel
● Gather and remove trash from vessel
● Clean and supply restrooms
● Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time
● Work the Galley when assigned serving drinks and snacks and receiving payment for these items; reconciliation of money taken must be completed at the end of every cruise
● Additional job duties assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
● High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred
● Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
● Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers
● Must possess capability – actively looking for ways to help others
● Energetic and enthusiastic personality essential
● Will work for extended periods of time without sitting
● Must be able to lift-up to fifty (50) pounds (Lifting 50 pounds may be a standard but at times may be required more than this.)
● Must be able to throw mooring lines from vessel and dock
● Must have normal color vision to accurately interpret navigational lights and color-sensitive system and safety displays
● Must pass child abuse clearances
● Must pass general first aid and CPR online course
● Participate and pass drug testing prior to beginning employment
● Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays
