DESCRIPTION
Under close supervision, assists engineers with the operation, repair and maintenance of engineering equipment and systems; stands underway watches at sea, and generator watches in port; repairs, maintains, and operates deck winches on the various research vessels; performs non-skilled duties including wiping oil, maintaining tools, cleaning, and preparation and painting of engine equipment and spaces. Performs day work and other job related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of how to operate, maintain and repair ship’s machinery and emergency equipment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing using standard office software applications.
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and independently organize available work time to meet assigned responsibilities.
Ability to interpret and use technical drawing and documentation.
Ability to stand watches at sea and in port.
Proven critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
Ability to accurately read gauges for oil, fuel and water levels, temperatures and pressures.
Knowledge of USCG, ABS, and University safety regulations and standards.
Oral and written command of the English language.
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with diverse groups.
Knowledge of USCG/DOT regulations for chemical drug and alcohol testing.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
U.S. Passport required.
Must be able to maintain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC) with QMED Oiler endorsement.
Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW95).
Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
Other endorsements may be required.
Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.
Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing.
