The Boat Pilot is responsible for operating a tow boat to move and position barges along the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. The role may also include other operational duties as needed.
Key Responsibilities
To be successful in this role, candidates must be able to perform the following duties:
• Operate a tow boat safely and efficiently on inland waterways
• Supervise the Deck Hand Laborer onboard
• Complete required documentation, including tow logs, safety reports, and equipment hours
• Identify and respond to safety hazards or equipment issues
• Communicate maintenance needs to the Operations Manager
• Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Requirements
• Maintain a professional, respectful attitude with coworkers, supervisors, and the public
• Willingness to travel and work away from home as required
• Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
• Report to the designated job site on time and ready to work
• Follow all company safety practices and policies
• Participate in a team environment and assist others as needed
• Maintain reliable and regular attendance
• Work independently and solve problems as they arise
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required
• At least 2 years of boat pilot experience preferred
• Knowledge of marine operations, with the ability to train deckhands
• Designated Examiner (DE) credential is a plus and may qualify for higher pay
Skills
• Able to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
• Comfortable speaking in small group and one-on-one settings
• Perform basic math skills as required for the role
• Use sound judgment to follow written and verbal instructions and solve practical problems
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 105 lbs occasionally
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing, or balancing at heights up to 60 feet
• Regular use of hands and arms for handling tools and equipment
• Ability to work in physically demanding environments
Work Environment
This is a hands-on role in an outdoor, sometimes harsh environment. Conditions may include exposure to weather, dust, noise, machinery, and confined spaces. Overtime and weekend work may be required.
