Under supervision, the Second Assistant Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all main and auxiliary engine room machinery and plant equipment while on duty and is expected to complete any routine service, or minor repair work as necessary during the watch. Second Assistant Engineers provide work direction for Oilers, Wipers, and unlicensed day workers in the maintenance, repair and proper operation of machinery and engine equipment in engineering spaces.
Traditionally they stand two 4-hour underway watches daily and security watches in port. Second Assistant Engineers maintain logs on all operating machinery while on watch. On SIO ships they generally serve as “Fuel King” with primary responsibility for maintenance of all fuel oil purifying and transfer equipment, water-makers/evaporators, potable water and ballasting pumps and valves, bunkering the ship, and maintaining fuel/lube oil, water and tank sounding reports. They assist in loading stores, and parts, and they perform other duties as defined by a ship’s senior officer during emergency situations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.
Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol pre-employment screening and post-employment random testing.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
U.S. Coast Guard Second Assistant Engineer license for related vessel.
U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95) and lifeboat endorsement.
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC) with 2nd Asst Engineer License.
Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
Other endorsements may be required.
