Under the general direction of the ship’s Captain, the Chief Engineer assumes complete charge of the Engineering plant and is responsible for the effective, safe operation of all ship’s engineering equipment, the vessel’s propulsion system, and all auxiliary machinery and spaces. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the proper operation, maintenance, and inspection of the main and auxiliary machinery and electrical, mechanical, and safety equipment of the vessel. Assigns and supervises the work of engine department personnel. Under emergency situations as defined by the ship’s Captain, performs jobs as deemed necessary.

Licenses and Certifications:

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer Unlimited license.
U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC).
Other endorsements may be required.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. SIO operates three major seagoing research vessels, which conduct physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of oceans worldwide. Cruises vary from local trips to expeditions as long as two and one-half years.
