Under limited supervision, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all engine room machinery and equipment aboard the research vessel. Stands underway watches and security watches in port. Maintains specialized fuel and water systems. Maintains logs. Provides work direction for all other Marine Engineering staff. Assists with the loading of stores and the bunkering of the ship. Performs other duties as defined by a ship’s senior officer during emergency situations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.
Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol pre-employment screening and post-employment random testing.
U.S. Passport
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer license for related vessel.
U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95) and lifeboat endorsement.
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
Other endorsements may be required.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world.
