Greg joined the Maritime Institute crew in January 2025. He served in the USARNG and the U.S. Coast Guard for 29.5 years. He was a Boatswain’s Mate Master Chief and Command Master Chief. His primary background includes Maritime Law Enforcement, Emergency Response, Heavy Weather Search and Rescue, Tactical Small Boat Operations, and shipboard operations and navigation.
Greg has sailed on the CGC Point Batan, CGC Munro, and CGC Amberjack as the OIC (CO). He has served on the Pacific Strike Team, Training Team, Small Boat Stations in Cape May as XPO (XO), and San Francisco as the OIC (CO), along with other assignments.
He holds a bachelor’s degrees in management and Homeland Security – Emergency Management, and master’s degree in international relations, along with numerous other certifications. He is an adjunct professor for undergraduates teaching International Relations. He is a qualified instructor for many of the deck courses offered at MI.
Originally from Illinois and has made San Diego his home. He is married to Susana Ruiz de Via and they have one son Joshua. He and his family love to travel, camp, and go to amusement parks.
