A native across three states of New England, graduated Roger Ludlowe High School, Fairfield, Connecticut in 1974. Attended University of Bridgeport before being accepted to SUNY Maritime College. Graduated Maritime College in August 1979 with a BS in Oceanography and Meteorology and an unlimited third mate license. Joined Master, Mates and Pilots the same month. Commenced commercial sailing as third officer October 1979 out of New York / New Jersey. Shifted home port and residence to Seattle in 1983. Continued to sail as third and second officer throughout the decade. Sailed as chief mate in 1991 for the Persian Gulf War with American Shipping Lines. Sailed relief chief mate with Sealand Services until being permanently engaged with Sealand in 1997. In 2004 sailed Master for USSM, Inc, a receiver for Sealand, until the company was taken up by Maersk Lines, Ltd in 2005. Engaged permanently as master by Maersk in 2007. Retired as master in 2019, his last port of arrival: New York.
A member of the Nautical institute, Council of American Master Mariners and the Boston Marine Society. An author of several maritime related articles for the periodicals of those organizations. Joined the USCG Auxiliary in 2010, served in several appointed and elected positions, presently president of the USCG Auxiliary Northwest District Past Division Commanders Association, and staff officer for Rescue Systems, Information Systems and Public Education.
Joined the Maritime Institute in 2024 as part-time instructor.
In his spare time Kevin works in wood, metal and electronics in his garage shop and enjoys daily life with his wife, Mary.
