Function and purpose for various forms of circuit protection against fault conditions to include adjustable thermal and/or magnetic overload elements. Description of construction of and operating characteristics of MSB to include a listing of common shipboard applications. Function and purpose of electric cables. Requirements for cable operating aboard ship for various voltage and current ratings (HV and LV cables) and how cables just be stranded copper construction. General safety, protection, maintenance, repair and inspection requirements of shipboard electrical cable. Circuit breakers and fuses must safely and quickly interrupt short circuits. Main supply feeders protection against shorts by circuit breakers with instantaneous magnetic trips to include magnetic, thermal and electronic trip devices. Performance requirements of fuses, general guidelines associated with fuse maintenance. Introduction to solid state devices, diodes, transistors, triacs, silicon controlled rectifiers, adverse effect of low power factor, single phase rectifier and three phases. Introduce variable frequency drives. Converter types. Operating principles of AC/DC/AC thyristor 3-phase controlled rectifier. Electronic soft start motor controller. Lab: HV circuit breaker removal, inspection and reinstallation.
