ELECTRICAL MACHINERY AND BASIC ELECTRONICS (EMBE)

The course objective is to instruct the student in the areas relevant to Control Systems at the Operational Level and in so doing, satisfy company, national and international regulations as stated in STCW Table A-III/1 Specification of minimum standard of competence for officers in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine-room or designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine-room.

Electrical equipment:
Generator and distribution systems
Preparing, starting, paralleling and changing over generators
Electrical motors including starting methodologies.
High-voltage installations
Sequential control circuits and associated system devices

Electronic equipment:
Characteristics of basic electronic circuit elements
Flowchart for automatic and control systems
Functions, characteristics and features of control systems for machinery items, including main propulsion plant operation control and steam boiler automatic controls.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Electrical Machinery and Basic Electronics (EMBE) (MARINS-861) course will satisfy: The examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.505(c) for the Electrician portion of the combined QMED Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer, if presented within one year of the completion of training; AND The EMBE training requirements of 46 CFR 11.329 (a)(4)(x) for STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW / 1,000 HP propulsion power or more (Operational Level); AND The EMBE standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.329(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-III/1 and Table A-III/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 17-14(Ch-5) Tasks 6.1.A, 6.1.B, 6.1.C, 6.1.D, 6.1.E, 6.2.A, 7.1.A; 7.2.A; 7.2.B; 7.3.A; and 7.4.A; AND The ETSO training requirements of 46 CFR 11.329 (a)(4)(v) for STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW / 1,000 HP propulsion power or more (Operational Level); AND Sea service credit for 30 days towards the requirements of 46 CFR 11.516(a)(1) for third assistant engineer or 46 CFR 12.503(a) for QMED. Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
