ELECTRONIC CHART DISPLAY INFORMATION SYSTEM (ECDIS)

Mariners successfully completing MARITIME INSTITUTE’s Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by Table A-II/1of the Seafarers Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code, as amended.

 

Mariners successfully completing MARITIME INSTITUTE’s ECDIS course will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS principles and operations as defined in the STCW code, as amended. This will include the understanding of the competencies in Table A-II of the STCW Code, but is not limited to:

 

  • Capabilities and limitations of ECDIS operations
  • How to interpret and analyze information obtained from ECDIS
  • Management of operational procedures, system files and data
  • How to install, correct and use electronic charts
  • How to determine the validity of sensor data (including radar overlays)
  • Potential errors in interpretation and presentation
  • Proper operational and alarm settings for Route Monitoring
  • How to access the ship’s log and data playback functions
  • How to plan and execute a Voyage Passage utilizing ECDIS
  • How to determine ship’s position using ECDIS with specific knowledge of its operational principles, limitations, sources of errors, detection of misrepresentations of information and methods of correction to obtain an accurate fix in accordance with A-II/2 of STCW Code.
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) (MARINS-179) course will satisfy: The ECDIS training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(vii), 11.307(a)(3)(vii), 11.309(a)(4)(xvi), 11.311(a)(3)(vii), 11.313(a)(3)(vii), 11.315(a)(3)(iv), 11.317 (a)(3)(v), 11.319(a)(4)(x), and 11.321(a)(3)(v); AND The ECDIS standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.309(a)(3) and 11.319(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-II/1 and Table A-II/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 12-14(Ch-6) and 02-18(Ch-4) Tasks 4.1 and 4.2; AND The ECDIS standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), 11.313(a)(2), and 11.315(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Table A- II/2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 10-14(Ch-4), 11-14(Ch-4), and 03-18(Ch-3) Tasks 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, and 6.7; AND The ECDIS standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.317(a)(2) and 11.321(a) (2); STCW Code Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 13-14(Ch-4) Task 1.7.A. Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
