OICEW - DIESEL ENGINE (NON-USCG)
This course is provided to familiarize the naval or maritime engineer with hybrid propulsion plants, including combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion.
This course incorporates classroom-based theory, hands-on practical application, and simulator-based training, which will familiarize the student with hybrid marine propulsion plants.
The classroom portion will provide the fundamental knowledge of diesel engine and gas turbine construction, support systems, and operation. In the laboratory, the student will disassemble, inspect all components, and then reassemble a diesel engine. The use of precision measuring instruments is incorporated to allow the student to assess the material condition of the engine, while gaining practical use of micrometers and calipers.
In the simulator, the student will be tasked with performing a light off procedure of the CODAG propulsion plant of an ANZAC Class Frigate and operate through the various propulsion modes.
Although this course is designed for the professional mariner, it remains open to anyone to expand their shipboard engineering knowledge.
