RULES OF THE ROAD

Steering and Sailing Rules; Conduct of Vessels in Sight of One Another; Conduct of Vessels in Restricted Visibility; Lights and Shapes; Sound and Light Signals; Interpretive Rules, Penalty Provisions, Implementing Rules; Vessel Bridge-To-Bridge Radiotelephone Regulations.

 

Subject Area and Topics:

This 16-hour course is intended to provide a student with the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency to successfully pass exam requirements equivalent to the United States Coast Guard (“USCG” or “Coast Guard”) Merchant Marine Exam Deck Officer Endorsements Q100 Rules of the Road – Inland-International.

Online Course: Once registered for the online course, you will receive access to our Online Portal via email within 2-3 business days. You have up to four (4) weeks to complete the online course readings and quizzes, starting on the date that Maritime Institute emails you your course log-in credentials. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS past this 4-week time frame. Upon completion of the online course, you MUST schedule your final examination to take in-person at one of our approved testing facilities. Our online course final exam testing facilities are currently in: Alameda and San Diego, CA; Norfolk, VA; Honolulu, HI; Homer, AK and Everett, WA. We test by appointment only.
 
Students must pass an in-person 50-question examination to successfully complete this course. Passing score is 90% or greater.
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Rules of the Road (MARINS-431) course with a passing score of at least 90% within one year of application will satisfy: The Rules of the Road examination requirements for renewal of any deck credential up to Master 200 GRT, Master or Mate of Fishing Vessels, or Apprentice Mate (Steersman); AND The Rules of the Road: International and Inland examination requirement to remove a geographic COLREGS limitation from a deck officer endorsement up to Master 200 GRT. A course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter.
