Maritime SASH Prevention and Response
Maritime SASH Prevention and Response
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) Every Mariner Builds A Respectful Culture (EMBARC) standards are mandatory requirements for U.S. flag commercial vessel operators carrying US Merchant Marine Academy cadets. They focus on preventing and responding to Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH). For those vessel operators not required to meet EMBARC standards, this training will provide mariners and shore support personnel with the tools they need to manage SASH prevention programs.
This 40-hour course was designed to meet EMBARC standards, including eligibility for National Advocate Credentialing Program (NACP) Provisional Certification as a Victim Advocate. The course provides SASH Contacts with the training and tools to help victims/survivors in a trauma informed manner. Topics include, but are not limited to, a background in the neurobiology of trauma, reporting requirements (company, United States Coast Guard, maritime academies, and MARAD), resources for victims/survivors, expected investigation process, jurisdiction, and trauma informed care.
As a member of Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP), the organization that created this SASH prevention training, Maritime Institute thought it was important to make the training as widely available as possible as a resource to the maritime community, and to support MARAD’s efforts to raise awareness about the need for this training to make a maritime career safe for all.
