Qualified Member of the Engine Department QMED - FIREMAN/OILER/ WATERTENDER (FOWT)
This course satisfies the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.505(c)(5) for national rating endorsements as QMED-Oiler and Fireman/Watertender; AND receive 60 days of sea service credit towards the sea service requirements of 46 CFR 12.503(a). This course does not satisfy any competencies for STCW.
TO APPLY FOR THE ENDORSEMENT ON YOUR MMC, THE CERTIFICATE(S) OF COMPLETION FROM THIS COURSE MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE USCG WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE COURSE COMPLETION DATE.
Mariners will demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill, and understanding for operation and maintenance of all engine room machinery. They will have the ability to monitor performance of engines and auxiliaries for proper operation within acceptable temperature and pressure ranges, and other parameters to ensure machinery is operating within safe, standard industry practices.
Monitoring of evaporators to ensure:
Proper operation including temperatures, pressure and water levels are maintained
Correct distribution of evaporator output
Tending fires by controlling fuel air flow
Cutting fires...

STEEL TOED shoes are REQUIRED to participate in QMED FIREMAN / OILER / WATERTENDER COURSE.
180 days* of sea service in a rating at least equal to that of a wiper or coal passer, is required for this QMED endorsement on the Merchant Mariner Credential. *Mariners successfully completing our QMED Fireman/Oiler/Watertender course WILL RECEIVE CREDIT for 60 days of engine room sea service. The mariner still must present evidence of qualifying engine room time, on a qualifying vessel, which can be completed either prior to or after completion of the course.
TO APPLY FOR THE ENDORSEMENT ON YOUR MMC, THE CERTIFICATE(S) OF COMPLETION FROM THIS COURSE MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE USCG WITHIN ONE YEAR OF THE COURSE COMPLETION DATE.Any applicant who has successfully completed your QMED-Fireman/Oiler/Watertender (FOWT) (MARINS-384) course within one year of application will: Satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for a national rating endorsement as QMED-Oiler and Fireman/Watertender; AND Receive 60 days of sea service toward the requirements of 46 CFR 12.503(a). A course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter.
